The Cincinnati Enquirer, April 1, 2006, reported that a child predator had been sentenced to prison for life. While that news was nothing revolutionary, the comments of one of his victims is worth mentioning. Seven years before this court sentencing, this man had sexually molested a ten-year old, who, now aged 17, stood in the courtroom and faced him. Her words, prepared in a statement read to the abuser by the judge, revealed the courage to challenge her abuser and to start her own healing journey: "You are finally faced with taking responsibility for your actions. I will never understand why men like you do things like that to innocent, powerless little girls, but I do know that after today there will be one less predator out on the streets. You might have had control over me that October day, but today I am in control … and you have lost. … To all those girls and women who are victims of sexual abuse, but are hiding it, please come forward. These men cannot and will not control our lives. We are stronger and wiser than them. We need to let our voices be heard."
